I first met Dwight Hornibrook when I was 15 years old and identified as a developing player for the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team. As my regional training coach and a member of the Canadian National Team staff, Dwight played an important role in my development and journey to becoming an international player and competing at the NCAA Division I level at North Carolina State University. What began as a coach-athlete relationship has grown into a lasting professional and personal friendship.

Dwight brings an exceptional depth of experience to soccer development and his resume speaks for itself. Career highlights include winning a national championship with UNB Men’s Soccer, serving on the Canadian National Team staff, coaching in the NCAA for 25 years, playing and coaching in the Canadian Soccer League, scouting in North America for Middlesbrough FC, and working with the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy and Futuro Soccer Academy. Having experienced high-level soccer as both a player and coach myself, I believe Dwight’s ability to identify potential, develop talent, and guide athletes toward the right opportunities is second to none.

What has always separated Dwight, however, is that he genuinely cares about the person behind the player. He understands that success requires more than talent; it requires guidance, honest feedback, informed decisions, and someone who understands the opportunities available at each level. Dwight has the experience, credibility, and character to encourage athletes to grow, empower players and families with knowledge, and create opportunities for them to reach their goals. I experienced that impact personally as a young player, and his mentorship has continued to influence me throughout my own playing, coaching, and professional career.

Dwight brings a depth of experience on both sides of the border—Canada and the United States—and that breadth shows in how he works. What sets him apart is his eye for detail. Dwight identifies and corrects the small things that many coaches simply don’t recognize—the habits and mechanics that separate a player who is good from one who is reaching their ceiling. Players who work with him don’t just improve incrementally; they break through plateaus they’d been stuck at for years, because someone finally named the thing that was holding them back.

He is also a genuine developer of people. Players trust him, they buy into his process, and they leave his environment more capable and more accountable than when they arrived.

Dwight is a developer of people first. He cares about holistic development, he is detail oriented, and has undeniable experience coaching and developing elite players. Dwight was a large reason why I began my collegiate coaching career. I believe his influence, tactically, technically, and psychologically, will continue to push and elevate this next generation of players to be their best.

Coach Dwight was an instrumental part of my formation as a young man at Houghton University between 1996–2000. He supported my footballing ambitions and added the necessary skills required to help me become a professional footballer. Our daily conversations in his office before or after training helped shape a much broader and positive perspective of the world. Coach Dwight opened the door and inspired me to pursue coaching football as a profession after my playing career. At a critical time in my life where I was at a crossroads with many unknowns, Coach was able to put me on the path that combined my passion for football, children and learning.

Thirty years later, Coach Dwight came out of retirement and moved to Ottawa after one phone call where I asked for his help! Without knowing it, he was the godfather of Futuro, as it was his direction and guidance that led to me becoming a coach. Coach Dwight is a living example of the Bible verse James 2:18 that says, “But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.”
